Description

3 bottles of this superb Muscadet from a great producer.

Loire expert Chris Kissack (the Wine Doctor) scored this 17.5-18/20 and wrote the following:
"This was harvested at 35 hl/ha, and having benefited from some warm weather at the end of the year it has achieved 13.2 degrees. It will be bottled in November 2012. A hugely mineral nose here, firm and very stony in character. Clean and quite fleshy in style on the palate, although solid, with some intensely floral, white-fruit tones. It has a lovely, integrated mineral quality. It shows a very exuberant style through the middle but it remains straight-edged, firm and stylish. There is brilliant potential here but it needs time. It is very restrained and substantial - backward even - with powerful minerality. Lovely."

Consistently rated over 90 points on Cellartracker. Here are some recent reviews:

11/19/2014 - MLIPTON WROTE:
At first, it showed a touch of oxidation, but rapidly transformed in air to a vibrant expression of Melon. Fairly rich with great acidity and minerality, it has rounded out a bit in the 2 years since I last had it, but is still fairly youthful.

Wine-Strategies (Feb 2014) wrote:
"Light straw color (darker than expected), very bright. A PnP that was immediately approachable, offering aromas of citrus pith, seawater, honeydew melon and crushed stones. Medium(-) body, with great first attack that athletically transitions to feature multiple layers of stone, orchard, citrus and kiwi fruits. Delightful texture, very fresh acids and clearly built for many years of enjoyment. Gains some weight as it warms. Next one in 2 years. 13,0% abv, drink thru 2025. recommended"

"Perhaps the most impressive wine from Muscadet I've ever come across. I believe that the Clisson is one of a newer group of Muscadet wines referred to as "the third level" by the vignerons - a very apt descriptor. There's still a core of rocks, seashells, saline, and acidity as one would expect from a Muscadet but this also has a beautiful layer of stone/white fruits layered on top. What really stands out though is the denseness and extract of the wine. There's just so much material - this almost pulsates in the mouth. The word backwards comes to mind.. this has huge potential in the cellar I think. This has more in common with a top level Chablis than a Muscadet - I would really have trouble picking this out as a Muscadet if tasted blind. (Turn to the Briords bottling if you're looking for a more classic Muscadet experience.) The 2007 version of this was balanced but not as dense. The 2009 version had more fruit and material but seemed a bit boozy and out of sorts. Marc Ollivier nailed it in this vintage though. This really does take it to the next level... a very, very impressive wine."
