Description

2 (75cl) bottles in this Auction. Sublime red Burgundy from an immaculate producer. Will benefit from storing for a few years yet.

94-95 points David Schildknecht (Wine Advocate): "Bachelet’s 2008 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes was his sole wine of the vintage to finish malo on an earlier schedule, namely in June, and as he reminds me, not only is this one reason why the wine is so expressive already today; the reason for consistently earlier malo from this parcel of centenarian vines lies in terroir: with white mother chalk just beneath the surface storing heat and resisting water, the fruit here always ripens first (though frequently at relatively low potential alcohol) and with markedly lower malic (and total) acidity, thus rendering a must whose pH is more hospitable to bacteria. A glorious nose of concentrated wild cherry, vanilla, nutmeg, cardamom, herbal elixir, and a hint of caramel ushers in a correspondingly alluring; already sumptuously silken and incipiently creamy; yet persistently vibratory and dynamic palate. Abundant forest floor and stony notes lend depth and mystery, yet for all of their metaphoric darkness and this wine’s suave texture, its explosive finish remains blazingly bright. This will be awesome to follow for the next 20 years if not longer. (June 2010)"

95-7 points Neal Martin (Wine Journal): "Wonderful purity on the nose, dark cherries, a touch of cassis and dark plum – very “Charmes” with superb definition. This is a slight honeyed nose coming through as a sign of the ripeness. The palate is silky smooth, beautifully balanced and poised, amazing clarity and definition with an utterly harmonious, silky smooth finish. The Charmes is exceptional for the vintage and one of 2008s standout successes. Tasted November 2009"

94+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The Charmes was one of the first in the cellar to finish its malo, with everything wrapped up by June 23rd this year. Consequently the wine was showing beautifully at the time of my visit. Year in and year out this is one of my very favorite grand cru bottlings in Gevrey, and the 2008 is another stellar example. As readers may recall, Monsieur Bachelet’s parcels in Charmes are perfectly situated, with the vast majority of vines right at the crown of the vineyard in the central section (just below Chambertin) and having been planted in 1920. These are augmented by a small parcel planted alongside those of Domaine Joseph Roty and are well over one hundred years of age. It is no wonder that this is consistently a brilliant wine and the 2008 is no exception. The bouquet is deep, complex and very pure, as it offers up a mélange of black cherries, espresso, black raspberries, great minerality, very gentle Gevrey meatiness and a judicious touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, suave and tangy, with a beautiful core of fruit, ripe, well-integrated tannins and outstanding length and grip on the complex and very transparent finish. A classic 2008. 2018-2050. (Nov/Dec 2009)"
