Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Brulees 2002

2002 was the last good vintage made by Philippe Engel, the fabled winemaker of Domaine Rene Engel who sadly passed away in 2005. Rene Engel wines are now as rare as hen’s teeth. The 2002 Rene Engel Vosne Romanee Aux Brûlées has an ultra pure and floral scent. Deep and sexy, cloudy floral nose from 60+ year old vines. I absolutely adore Engel wines, they are soft, honest type of floral and feminine. (94/100)

I have always had a weakness for Engel's immensely appealing 2002 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées, a charming and expressive wine that bursts with aromas of peony, rose petal, sweet berry fruit and cinnamon. Medium to full-bodied, supple and velvety, it's elegantly enveloping, with lively acids, melting tannins and a long, perfumed finish. (WK)

The 2002 Vosne-Romanée les Brûlées from the late Philippe Engel is drinking extremely well. It has a mature color with a wide tawny rim. The nose is mellow with touches of bacon fat, rosemary, light brambly red fruit and spicebox - very sedate and charming. The palate is medium-bodied and more forward than the Grands Echézeux '02 that I coincidentally tasted a week later. The tannins here are softer and there is not the same pizzazz toward the finish, but it does continue to give a lot of pleasure and a refined, slightly rustic style. Drink 2014-2024
