Description

2 bottles of mature, benchmark pinot for Felton Road. Under screwcap.

Block 5 is one of the 2 'grand crus' from Felton, who are arguably the stars of Central Otago, and in turn NZ pinot.

There is always some debate about whether new world wines, and pinot in particular improve and gain complexity as they mature - and the only way to see for yourself is benchmark wine, from a great year, with sufficient stuffing to see it through.

2002 in Central Otago had the earliest harvest since 1990 starting late March, with lowish yields and small berries producing some very ripe, powerful and concentrated wines. 2002 is considered the vintage which 'established' Otago pinot noir.

the 2002 was the first vintage at Felton where screwcap became standard, which means it is the most mature example where it's condition can be guaranteed, and the quality of vintage was also in place.

Colour is deep, is distinctly less ruby than the standard Felton. Bouquet however is vibrant, powerful and complex. It is a muscular, sweetly dark fruited wine, with earthy, brambly scents. Almost a black cherry liqueur against forest floor, hard spice, wafts of tobacco/herbs and lifted complexity. At it's peak. A superb wine.

A wine of this age and quality is rare as the proverbial hens teeth obviously, as production is never large and frankly the single block wines tend to all be drunk far too young.
