Description

The Valtellina is cris-crossed with 40 Km of terraced vineyards. In the centre of this prestigious viticulture Chiuro you will find the cellars of Balgera, who are based in the ancient residence of the noble Quadrio. Since 1885 the company's founder Peter Balgera, traded the wines of Valtellina in neighbouring Switzerland. He was succeeded by Leo Balgera, which continued production and export and then Leo’s son Gianfranco built new cellars evolving and improving production techniques, aging and bottling. Today the activities of winemaker Paul Balgera flanked by the fifth generation, Luca and Matteo, provide the expertise. They still operate together with the tradition of '' ancient know how” to make wine. With continuous improvement of winemaking techniques and the modernization of the winery facilities, the wine range was gradually expanded in various quality and purity by making wine using a great variety: Nebbiolo.

The Valtellina Superiore Sassella by Balgera is a sumptuous and elegant red wine produced using Chiavennasca (the local name for Nebbiolo grapes) from vineyards on calcareous and pebbly soils. After choosing the best batches of grapes, and making the soft pressing of the same, fermentation takes place in steel containers with maceration on the skins that lasts about 12-14 days. Aging takes place 2 years in large oak barrels and then 2 years in small barrels. Before release it rests 12 months in the bottle. The Sassella has a bright garnet red colour when young and goes a lovely brick red when older. On the nose aromas of red fruits and flowers, with spicy notes. On the palate it is enveloping and aristocratic with silky tannins. A very long and fine finish. I great long lived wine. With such a great age quality is not always guaranteed, but these bottles look to have been carefully look after as can be seen from the colour, level and presentation.

With a high fill and pristine presentation, the bottles are lying in the premises of a wine merchant.
