Description

Grand Puy Lacoste 2002 - 1 bottle
ERP - RP says 86, NM says 92pts
This is a lighter vintage, so really not to RP's taste; these are their full notes:

A light wine by the standards of this property, this herbaceous, spicy, red currant and plum-scented wine shows weedy notes of green tea intermixed with cherries and some washed-out red currants. It is a pleasant, picnic-styled Grand-Puy-Lacoste to drink during its first 5-7 years of life.

Tasted blind at Farr's 2002 Bordeaux tasting. A classic Pauillac bouquet with notes of blackberry, sous-bois and pencil box. Great lift and expression and with time there are some subtle tobacco accents following through. The palate is tannic, masculine, well balanced but austere, with racy acidity and a finish that would not be seen dead without a cravat. Excellent. Tasted October 2009. Drink 2010-2022

Grand Puy Lacoste 2003 2 bottles (ERP 88 pts)
An atypically superficial effort from one of my favorite Pauillacs, the 2003 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is very good, but it does not stand up to some of the finest northern Medoc offerings. A deep ruby/purple-tinged color is followed by a moderately intense bouquet of black currants and underbrush. It hits the palate with good fruit and medium body, but tails off in the finish. It is an elegant, lighter-styled example of this generally high-class performer. It can be consumed over the next 10-12 years.

Carbonnieux Rouge, 2005 (ERP 91+)
A beauty from Carbonnieux, the 2005 has a dense ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of charcoal embers, smoke, graphite, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, pure and lush as well as beautifully textured and long. This wine is just entering its plateau of maturity and should hang there for at least another two decades.

For what it's worth (Not much!), I have had several bottles of each and I prefer the Grand-Puy Lacoste; I find it often really enjoyable in off-vintages. It has to be said, I do also prefer a lighter style of wine.
