Description

1998

Wine Advocate # 134
Apr 2001 Robert Parker 90 Drink: 2004 - 2019
The 1998 reveals a classic creme de cassis-scented nose along with powerful, tight, firmly-structured flavors. While moderate tannin is present, there is more than enough extract and depth behind the tannin to support the enthusiastic rating. However, this wine needs 3-4 more years of cellaring, and should keep for 16-18 years. This is a top-flight claret.

Tasted at the chateau, this has a ripe, almost sorbet-like nose with floral overtones, violets and rose petals complementing the succulent strawberries, loganberry and red cherries. The palate is fleshy, seems to be more Merlot-dominated at present, but certainly full-bodied, with great depth for the vintage. Ripe, saturated tannins towards the finish that is bursting full of bright black cherries and briary. Great length. A lovely ’98 that still needs another 3-5 years before becoming approachable. Tasted April 2008.

Wine Advocate # 146
Apr 2003 Robert Parker 93 Drink: 2007 - 2020
This large-scaled wine has a saturated ruby/purple color and a big creme de cassis nose, with a hint of licorice and tobacco. Still somewhat closed, this deep, full-bodied, luscious, muscular offering exhibits ripe tannin, loads of fruit, and tremendous purity. This is a gorgeous example of one of the most popular wines in the Medoc. Its savory tannin and low acidity suggest it should be close to its plateau of drinkability in 4-6 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020+.

Sumptuous with a lot of puppy fat in November 2004. Tasted again at the Lacoste vertical in June 2005. A deep garnet colour. A deep broody, cedary nose with blackcurrant and a hint of black truffle. Still very tight on the palate, pinched at first but with a few swirls it reveals a gorgeous, bright, fruit-driven palate with great purity and a more supple texture than I anticipated. Touch of spice and lemongrass on the finish. Reminds me of a great Lynch Bages. Great potential. Drink from 2012.

2001

Wine Advocate # 153
Jun 2004 Robert Parker 88 Drink: 2006 - 2014
A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by this property’s tell-tale cassis characteristics. Medium-bodied and monolithic, with fine ripeness as well as depth along with light to moderate tannin in the finish, the 2001 Grand-Puy-Lacoste should be at its peak between 2006-2014.

A refined, well-defined nose of black cherries, cedar, raspberry and black cherries. Good definition and lift. A medium-bodied palate, well-defined with good balance and focus. Fine acidity, crisp black fruits on the focused finish. Very Pauillac. Excellent. Tasted October 2007.
