Description

1 bottle Greenock Creek 1996 Seven Acres Shiraz.99 Points.
1 bottle Greenock Creek 1996 Creek Block Shiraz.96 Points.

I was absolutely astounded by the quality of the wines of Greenock Creek, particularly the Grenache and Shiraz Cuvees. This winery, whose winemaker is Chris Ringland,is,according to importer Dan Phillips, one of the most amazing in Australia.Certainly one taste of these wines will make a believer out of anybody.Sadly, much of the production is already sold in Australia.
I rated the 1996 Shiraz Seven Acres slightly higher than the 1996 Shiraz Creek Block, but I would not be surprised to see these scores reversed at any given tasting. Both are amazing wines, representing the essence of old-vine Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. There are 500 cases of the Seven Acres and 100 cases of the Creek Block. The Seven Acres is made from 9 year old Shiraz vines and the Creek Block from 60 year old Shiraz, with the latter having 15.8% alcohol and the former 14.6%.The 1996 Shiraz Creek Block exhibits a dense purple color and a spectacular nose of roasted coffee, intermixed with cassis, blackberries, licorice and spice. The wine displays amazing ripeness,an unctuous texture, full bodied palate, and a finish that lasts for 45+ seconds. Its high alcohol and tannin are nearly concealed by the wine's amazing concentration.Anticipated maturity:2000-2020.The 1996 Shiraz Seven Acres possesses all the above,in addition more complexity in the nose(violets?),as well as a more delineated palate. It is an enormous, massive, fabulously concentrated ,yet symmetrical wine.Although few readers will have a chance to try these wines, their names are worth knowing,as they are amongst the world's finest Shiraz.
These are amazing wines!

Robert Parker (Wine Buyers Guide 5th Edition,Also Wine Advocate-Dated April 1999)

Robert Parker wrote his latest update on a tasting of older Australian wines in the June 2009 Wine Advocate, and described the Greenock Creek tasting as follows:-
This has always been one of my favorite Barossa wineries.Of all the flights we tasted Greenock Creek stood out as the most riveting wines of the entire tasting. The Shiraz Seven Acres 1996 possesses an opaque purple color as well as a beautiful nose of sweet blackberries, licorice and flowers,a massive mouthful, and greater definition and elegance than I remember in its exuberant, fruit bomb, youthful stage.Still a very young wine, even more massive than the 1995,it is incredibly promising

Parker raised his rating on the Seven Acres Shiraz 1996 from 97 to 99 Points. However he did not taste the Creek Block 1996.
