Description

Chateau Grillet is a highly respected white wine appellation of the northern Rhone Valley. It is unusual among France s wine appellations, not only for being one of the smallest in terms of geographical area, but also for being one of very few to be claimed only by a single producer (Romanee-Conti being a notable other). All Chateau Grillet wine is produced at the eponymous Chateau itself, which has been owned by the Neyret-Gachet family (whose name appears on the label) since 1820.

The Chateau Grillet vineyards cover only a few hectares of unique terroir and mescolimate, located within the boundaries of the Condrieu appellation on the west bank of the Rhone river. The Cote Rotie and Saint-Joseph titles lie to the north and south respectively.
The vines here are sheltered from the cold north winds (which have a strong effect on the surrounding area) by a shallow crescent of steep, terraced slopes rising precipitously 300ft (100m) from the river. These are founded on a stable granite bedrock, but the less-stable structure of the rocky topsoils makes retaining walls a necessity for the terraces.
Chateau Grillet s wine is made entirely from Viognier, and is thus very aromatic and marked by fruity aromas of peach and apricot. The acidity of the wines is noticeable but complemented by the gentle full-bodied oiliness associated with the local white wine style. Typical Chateau Grillet is less intensely flavored than Condrieu s white wines, perhaps because it is given extended barrel maturation (18 months) to round out the more obvious notes. The barrel maturation also gives Chateau Grillet the ability to be aged for more than ten years, giving it time to develop into the wine that has received much praise.

Ownership: the property was acquired in June 2011 by François Pinault, also owner of Chateau Latour and Domaine d Eugenie in Vosne-Romanée.
