Description

An unrivalled passion for vineyard culture and wine has run through the veins of the Chave family since the estate was first founded over five centuries ago. Planted with vines aged 60 years on average, the estate stretches over 17 hectares - ten in red Hermitage, five in white Hermitage and two in Saint-Joseph. Supported by his son, Gérard Chave attempts to perpetuate the estate's signature wines, remaining loyal to the ancestral techniques that forged their reputation: mastery of yields, no artificial weed killers or fertilisers, harvests as late as possible in order to reach perfect maturity, and low intervention vinification, leaving the wine to take shape naturally. Harvests from each plot of land are vinified and aged separately, allowing them to express their own defining characteristics, which is crucial to achieving a final blend with good complexity. The red Hermitage from the Chave estate stands out from the appellation's other crus by its unique development: often starting out very closed, it gives very little away in terms of how it might evolve, but ultimately opens up, sometimes after a great many years. This wine undergoes a real metamorphosis much to the delight of patient connoisseurs who are finally treated to a fully expressive nectar with exceptional ageing potential of up to half a century in good years. Full-bodied, concentrated, magnificently complex and elegant, the wine develops a broad palette of aromas ranging from blackcurrant to smoky tones via notes of prune, leather, toast and spices.
