The 2008 Private Cellar is only the seventh ever release of this label.

The Private Cellar label allows us to personally select what we consider to express the best and most idiosyncratic from each vintage. The 2008 vintage is regarded as a landmark vintage.
In what proved to be a very demanding year for many wineries with the well documented warm weather in early March, Hewitson was able to continue to make red wine to exceptionally high standards. The first and generally what sets the wines of Hewitson apart from others is the predominately dry-grown vineyards dating back to the 1800’s with very deep root systems. These roots in some cases go down around ten metres into the sub soil. These vines have their own biological clock and it is of little consequence what is going on around them above the earth. Their drive is sourced from the nutrients and water derived deep underground.
The 2008 Private Cellar is a selection of the finest cuvee of Shiraz and Mourvédre from the Barossa Valley. The warmth in March drove colours and tannins to unprecedented levels, while the winery managed to preserve fresh, ripe, red and black forest berry fruits. Traditional winemaking techniques saw exceptional flavour extraction followed by 20 months maturation in new French barriques. The integration is superb. Cellaring potential of 20 plus years.

Tasting Notes

The Hewitson 2008 vintage is regarded as a landmark vintage.

In what proved to be a very demanding year for many wineries due to the well documented warm weather in early March, Hewitson was able to continue to make red wine to exceptionally high standards. There are two reasons. The first and generally what sets the wines of Hewitson apart from others is our predominately dry-grown vineyards dating back to the 1800's have very deep root systems. These roots in some cases go down ten metres into the sub soil. These vines have their own biological clock and it is of little consequence what is going on around them above the earth. Their drive is sourced from the nutrients and water derived deep underground.

The second reason is that the Hewitson new red wine cuverie was used for the first time in the 2008 vintage. This gave us ultimate flexibility to pick the vineyards at the perfect ripeness without jeopardising or compromising the quality of any of our cuvees.

The 2008 Private Cellar is a selection of our finest cuvee of Shiraz and Mourvèdre from the Barossa Valley. The warmth in March drove colours and tannins to unprecedented levels while the flexibility endeared to us in the winery preserved fresh, ripe red and black forest berry fruits.
Our traditional winemaking practices saw exceptional extraction followed by 20 months maturation in new French barriques. The integration is superb.

The mature wine was racked from barrel and left to settle under natural gravitational forces, then bottled.

Hewitson 2008 Private Cellar Shiraz Mourvèdre has a cellaring potential of at least 20 years.

08 Private Cellar "Nicely Bowled Mr Hewitson!"
Nick Stock, The Good Wine Guide 2011 on Nov-2010

Rating : 96 Points Voted Best Blend in Australia

This 2008 Private Cellar release is a shiraz-mourvèdre blend with immense poise and grace, fusing two varieties together with seamless stitching. With smells of blue plum and blackberry, really ripe and nicely spiced-up in the winery, the oak's well matched. The palate's supple and even, with a strong, ripe sweet-fruit presence that'sunderscored by evenly placed savoury tannin structure. The palate traces a long line through the finish; really impressive line and length here. Nicely bowled, Mr Hewitson!
