Domaine Jean Chauvenet crafts wines described by many as some of the most elegant and stylish in the whole Nuits- St Georges area The Chauvenet family traces its roots as vignerons in Nuits St. Georges back to 1680. Jean Chauvenet expanded the family holdings to include several 1er Cru vineyard plots while also increasing the amount of wine that was bottled at the domaine instead of being sold to negociants. Jean retired in 1994 and Christophe Drag, his son-in-law, assumed the management of the domain. The estate owns 9.5 hectares of vineyards across the Nuits St. Georges appellation. About 75% of the vines are Nuits “villages” while the balance consists of select parcels in the finest 1er Cru vineyards sites. The vines average 45 years of age and are planted in the traditional high density of 10,000 vines per hectare. Soils on the northern, Vosne side of the appellation (Damodes, Bousselots), are primarily pebbles and limestone with a little clay. Soils in the southern sector (Rue de Chaux, Vaucrains) are deeper, brown limestone.
Les Vaucrains should surely be considered alongside les Saint Georges for Grand Cru status; the politics though are that there are just a handful of local owners in les Saint Georges, including the Hospices, but, at neighbouring Vaucrains, there are 22, and those owners are more dispersed throughout the region. Christophe has 42 ares that produce a fairly healthy 8 barrels. The wine itself is as mind blowing as ever with its 'knock you back' intensity of pure loganberry and fruits of the forest. There are two phases of tannins. The first a little green and rough and they should disappear quickly. The second are finer, riper and make a complex blend with the natural acidity. These encase a second wave of fruits and fineness. Grand Cru quality. 2021 to 2038.
