Description

NB. The image shows the 1999 vintage. THESE BOTTLES ARE FROM THE EXCEPTIONAL 1998 VINTAGE

Jim Barry's flagship red, The Armagh, has a reputation for excellence renowned throughout the world, commanding high prices at release and at auction. The name of 'Armagh' was bestowed by the original Irish settlers who arrived in 1849 and named the lush rolling hills after their homeland. The 3.5 hectare Armagh vineyard yields less than 2 tonnes per acre on notoriously poor soil (sandy-gravel) and lies on a north-west facing slope which acts as a natural sun trap, ensuring the fruit is always fully ripened when picked. This produces a wine which has developed a reputation for excellence throughout the world. It is usually aged for around eighteen months in 100% new French oak to add an extra layer of complexity.

Jim Barry is something of a legendary figure in the Australian wine industry, and certainly a name that everyone knows in the Clare Valley, where he spent the entirety of his 57 year winemaking career (he sadly passed away in 2004 - the business is now run by his children). After graduating from Roseworthy Agricultural College, Australia, in 1947, he spent 22 years as manager and winemaker at the Clarevale Co-operative Winery. In 1959, Jim and his wife established their own winery in the cool uplands of the North Mount Lofty ranges, about 50 kilometres north of Adelaide. Today it is the most famous winery in the region, with more than 50 gold medals and 10 major trophies for their wines.
