Description

Tasting Note: “The perpetually frustrating business of describing wine led us to compare this to a right bank Bordeaux wearing a big fur coat, or as Lucia malapropped: “a velvet fist, inside an iron glove.” It’s a terrific wine, regardless of our descriptive shortcomings. It has height, width and depth. It has layers of flavours and is effortlessly elegant. Cabernet Franc from the Loire can often be quite austere and uncompromising when young, whereas this has a beating heart and displays a distinctly more feminine side to the grape. It’s as though Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir had a glorious lovechild. Molten cherries, blackcurrants, cranberries, a hint of kola and wild purple flowers, not to mention the tell-tale Cabernet Franc notes of blackcurrant leaf and a light sprinkling of pencil shavings. The wine is equally expressive in the mouth, gliding over the palate with its generous sweet fruit, cool graphite backbone and tangy acidity while the tannins are seamlessly integrated into the body of the wine. Well worth a try, no ifs, no buttes. Certified organic. 13.5% alc. It’s drinking beautifully now, but I reckon it will provide delicious, increasingly complex, savoury drinking until 2029.

JancisRobinson.com (Tamlyn Currin): “Someone once wrote to us, indignantly, to say that violets didn t have any smell. He was very cross that one of our writers had said a wine smelt of violets. I wanted to send him a sympathy card in response because he may well suffer from anosmia, but that s a story for another day. Suffice to say that this tasting note should carry a health warning for the poor chap, because this wine tastes (and feels) like a glassful of violets. Have you ever felt a violet? Please do! Their leaves and petals feel quite as lovely as a baby s cheeks. And next time you pass a violet, please smell it, pick it, put it on your tongue. That woodsy, deep-shadow floral bitterness with a hint of blueberry sweetness, clove and mint is just what this wine tastes like. It also tastes (and feels) like a mouthful of tiny coal-black, graphite-scribbled marbles dipped in moss-pool water. And like a scribble of indigo ink as the tannins inscribe an autograph in cursive on the finish. Will age and age... GV (TC)” 17.5 points

Vinous: “From vines at “the top of the hill”. A gentleman’s Cabernet Franc, subdued and stately. Deep ruby. There’s black cherry and plum, along with underlying meatiness, even bloodiness. Soft tannins, plus jolts of dark graphite and black pepper on the finish. Attractive, thrilling balance between firm and gentle. Drink now-2028.” 93 points
