Description

Legendary wine from the great year of 1971.

"Now, what are the characteristics of a Goldcapsule, why buy such a wine? Think of them as limited edition, rather small production lots of the best Auslese of a vintage. They are made from stronger selected grapes containing higher concentrated juice, usually affected by a certain amount of botrytis / noble rot, capable of aging even remarkably longer than “basic” Auslesen, lasting for many decades. In the course of time, they lose some of their sweetness, gain more and more elegance and harmony and the complex profile and depth come to the forefront."

J&B Website

"Green gold. Fully racy and lively. Fantastic acidity. Complex. Fully evolved. Wonderful, and reminiscent of 2001s, to have this combination of intense ripeness and acidity."

Jancis Robinson MW: 19 points

"Lovely golden colour; fragrant, creamy, harmonious bouquet; medium sweet, lovely flavour, balance, length and fragrant finish. Two notes, first tasted blind, 5*."

Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine, 2002

"I had.....(the "gold capsule” bottling).... with a small tasting group and it was singing. The wine is a golden color with a deliciously honeyed nose, terrific purity, weight, and an astoundingly integrated blend of acidity and sweetness. Truly, if you remain unconvinced about the soaring greatness of Riesling, get your hands on one of these bottles. Among the world of collectible wines, it remains a relative bargain for the superb quality."

Drvino.com 2011

"Light amber-orange in the glass, a truly gorgeous hue, this wine smells fantastically of petrol, beeswax, and dried orange peel, plus some undefinable sense of history. In the mouth, the wine slides musically across the tongue. It has a light sweetness remaining, and offers phenomenally balanced flavors of candied orange peel, honey, roasted nuts, and a background rumble of stoniness that emerges only after careful study. The long finish has a wonderful, airy vanilla and cream sherry aroma to it, with hints of honey roasted nuts. A perfect example of why Riesling is one of the greatest aging wines in the world. Outstanding."

Vinography, 2011

"Very ripe and honeyed aroma but wonderfully pure; rich but incredibly racy, intense and still very sweet. Perfect wine and no hurry with this. Though there's no reason not to open one if you happen to have any."

Cellartracker Notes: 96 points average, which is very high for 10 notes. No longer able to reproduce the notes unfortunately.

"A singularly amazing wine. A dark golden color, bordering almost on light amber, with a rather nice viscosity. An intensely perfumed nose of nectarines and raw honey evolved for an hour to show browner notes of Assam tea and maple syrup. I could even make out a bit of bergamot. The palate, equally, evolved in the glass from yellower notes of nectarines and peaches to darker ones of tea, maple, and peach skin. Texture-wise, it danced effortlessly across the palate with a very sleek acidity that was in perfect balance with the residual sugar that still remained. Notes of petrol were almost not there (I would say, there were mere whispers), which I found to be particularly curious, though I wasn't complaining as those can sometimes overwhelm an aged Riesling in my opinion. I think this wine was absolutely stunning and as strange as this may sound, I think many of the aged Riesling fans on this board would find this wine to be painfully young. And I think I might agree that it has years and years still ahead of it."
