Description

Coteaux du Layon Rochefort-sur-Loire wines are sweet white wines made from Chenin Blanc. They are produced under the Coteaux du Layon appellation, specifically from the parish of Rochefort-sur-Loire in the Anjou district of the western Loire Valley. It is one of six Coteaux du Layon Villages designations.

The vineyard area is located at the northern end of the broader Coteaux du Layon zone. It sits at the junction of the Layon with the Loire, and therefore has water close by on three sides.

The junction of rivers of different sizes is closely associated with botrytis and dessert wine production. Smaller, faster running, colder tributaries run into larger, slower, warmer rivers, causing morning fogs. As long as the sun burns off these fogs during the day, beneficial noble rot may result.

This 18-hectare estate is located at the entrance to the village of Rochefort-sur-Loire, a small town located just before the confluence of the Layon and Loire rivers. Founded in 1935, it was taken over in 1995 by Gilles Sorin, son of Andre and this was his first vintage.

I bought a case of this wine from a collector and last had a bottle last year and it was drinking superbly well and has many years remaining in the course of it's life. Currently lying in a wine merchants premises.
