Description

An opportunity to discover something new and truly memorable.

A stringent selection allows for only 30% of the estate’s production for L’Ostal Cazes to refine into wine.
• Blend: 65% Syrah, 13% Carignan, 12% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre
• Aging: 15 months in French oak barrels.
• Tasting notes: Powerful and fleshy, wines from L’Ostal Cazes reflect the terroir of their appellation uncommonly well. They have a deep colour, a silky texture and a spicy and explosive nose, with scents of garrigue scrubland, ripe black fruit and morello cherry. In the mouth, great richness, fatty, ripe fruit and creaminess that envelops elegant and distinguished tannins.

L’Ostal Cazes can be enjoyed young thanks to the generosity of its fruit, but the richness and elegance of its tannins will allow it to felicitously age.

Robert Parker writes:
"Jean-Michel and son Jean-Charles Cazes founded l-Ostal Cazes in 2002, vinifying fruit from 135 acres of vines in high-tech facilities that occupy an old tile works in La Liviniere. The Cazes family's renowned oenologist Daniel Llose pursues sophisticated and carefully controlled vinifications particular to each grape variety".

Lush, rich, heady Syrah-dominated blend. Sweet notes of red and black fruits, tar, crushed red chili peppers, and hints of high-class oak rise from the glass. The layered texture gives way to still present tannin. Heady alcohol is present. Very polished wine, hard to say where this will go. (Made by Jean-Michel Cazes.)

This wine could be exhibit no. 1 of why I like the wines of Minervois. Deep and rich red wines with distinct personalities. This wine has laid a layer of jamminess over the traditional terrior-dirven approach. On the nose, fragrant with red fruits, lavender, violets, smokiness, forest floor, and a surprising grapiness that keeps drawing me back in. On the palate, plum, clay and the most minerality I have ever experienced. Jamminess is overlayed on a canvass of acid backbone (almost Priorat-style) and that lovely rockiness. This wine is crushed rocks if ever there was such a thing. Not sure if any of this defines my favorites in a wine, but the profile is so distinct and well done that it deserves high praise.

Beautifully floral on the nose with dark and deep licorice on the palate. Bitter, dark chocolate. Earthiness shines through without overwhelming the easy-going acidity in the background. Long finish. This would be an outstanding steak wine. I love it.

I love this wine! Deep and dark and rich. Beautiful nose and deep earthiness on the palate. Balanced tannins and fruit with some light secondary flavors. Finish is medium to long. Stands up nicely to strong-flavored mediterranean foods. Nice.
