Description

Classifications often fail to reflect the current state of a chateau, and that's certainly the case for this Pauillac Fifth Growth. Chateau Lynch-Bages makes rich, powerful, full-bodied wines capable of long life. Often dense, solid and somewhat medicinal in the early years, the wine turns fleshier and more supple with a decade in bottle. While the chateau was founded by the Lynch family in the 1600s, they sold it to the Cazes family, who still run the show. In addition to the Grand Vin, the chateau also produces a second-label wine called Haut Bages Averous, as well as a white Bordeaux.

"The best of the non-first-growth Pauillacs. A wonderful roast-beef and gravy scent, a melange of roasted berry fruits and an almost brandied extract, combined with generously textured tannins, seemed the very definition of the kind of ripe yet rippling gorgeousness which 1989 should offer at its best". (Andrew Jefford - Decanter Jan 2000)

"Tasting Notes"
"Consistently backward and dense, with enormous potential, this admirable wine will not be ready for prime time drinking for another 5-7 years. The color is not quite as opaque as the 1990's, but reveals more purple and no lightening at the edge. Hugely concentrated flavors have just begun to offer up a nose of cedar and creme de cassis. Powerful and muscular, with high tannin and superb concentration, this is Lynch Bages at its biggest and most beastly. However, everything is in balance for a stunning evolution." 95 Points. Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate, 6/00
