"Light, clear crimson; given the medium-bodied weight, the intensity and length of the wine is prodigious; unlike the '08, red fruits, rather than black, are the main theme on the aromatic bouquet and through the palate. Made from very old vines, and comes with a 20-year cellaring guarantee; French oak and fine tannins complete the story of its ultra-limited production."


Winery Tasting Notes:
"What sets the wines of Hewitson apart from others is our predominately dry-grown vineyards dating back to the 1800s having very deep root systems. These roots in some cases go down ten metres into the sub soil. These vines have their own biological clock and it is of little consequence what is going on around them above the earth. Their drive is sourced from the nutrients and water derived deep underground. It is this inheritance that provides the foundations for the making of great wine.

The 2009 Private Cellar is a selection of our finest cuveé of Shiraz and Mourvèdre from the Barossa Valley. The 2009 ripening period saw hot and dry conditions early that yielded to warm sunny days later in the season. These conditions are perfect for old vines producing grapes for full-bodied red wines. Our traditional winemaking practices saw exceptional extraction followed by 24 months maturation in new French barriques. The integration is superb. The resultant wine has terrific balance and structure. There is real power yet elegance. This is the paradox that best describes great wine.
Hewitson 2009 Private Cellar Shiraz Mourvèdre has a cellaring potential of at least 20 years."
