Description

Crusted port is usually a blend of port wine from several vintages, although single vintage crusted ports have sometimes been made in the past. Unlike vintage port, which has to be sourced from grapes from a single vintage, crusted port affords the port blender the opportunity to make best use of the varying characteristics of different vintages. Crusted port is bottled unfiltered, and sealed with a driven cork. Like vintage port it needs to be decanted before drinking. The date on a crusted port bottle refers to the bottling date, not the year the grapes were grown. The hue is often very pale, the ‘crust’ contains the colour and can be heavy in form.

Recently removed from an Essex cellar where it has lain undisturbed since the late 1970’s only being moved to clean the label for images and to check the bottle for general condition. The level is top shoulder.

I recently opened a bottle of this Port to check on its condition. The bottle selected was ‘low shoulder’ and the wine was decanted into 3 x 25cl bottles four hours prior to tasting. One was left with a colleague who is a Master of Wine to assess. One was tasted after four hours and the third bottle was left to see how the wine changed over the next five days (the wine held up very well for three days before the fruit faded).

A couple of photos of the wine in glass are included in images.

Combined tasting notes from my MW friend and me were: Sherry like mahogany hue but the nose is Port through and through. Noticeable alcohol notes mingle with dried fruits and walnuts on the nose. The palate displayed a richness with a dryish cut. The alcohol is nicely checked by the Christmassy dried fruit notes. The finish, long and warming. Interesting but not overwhelming. Does need food, perhaps some hard cheese or even Christmas Cake. (Tried with a vintage Gouda which seemed to work well).
