Wines bought from and stored in Wine Society cellars. The Wine Society will deliver the wine and cost is included in price paid.
Meerlust`s ‘second wine` is a smart blend of majority cabernet sauvignon, with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot matured in French oak barrels for 17 months. As no Meerlust Rubicon 2019 was released, this wine includes some of the best wine made in that year, and it has taken a little longer to settle down in bottle as a result. Approachable now, it will develop greater complexity and harmony with a few years in bottle. There is a delicious sweetness to its red-fruit profile underpinned by good structure, with warmth, touches of spice and a persistent finish. Sticklers for quality, the Meerlust team has always insisted that Rubicon is only made in the very best years, and so in less favourable vintages (of which there have only been a few) all the wine is declassified to the Meerlust Estate Red. This is less than half the price of its superior sibling (making it great value for money). The following two notes were left by Wine Society members in 2023 who bought this wine:- 1)This is the kind of a Bordeaux wine that I love. Smooth, red fruit and spice . And at a very keen price. As I’d not tried it before I only bought one bottle. I’ve logged in to buy more but it’s oos. Others obviously know what good value Meerlust Estate is! 2) Blackcurrant jelly on the nose, bitter cherries in the mouth, and slightly drying on the tongue. I'll be keeping my remaining bottles for another year as I have high expectations that extra time will improve an already extraordinarily good value wine. If you are tempted to drink now, plan a rich meal such as beef or pheasant casserole, open the bottle an hour in advance, decant, and enjoy. These were the only comments left against this wine and both reviewers awarded 5 stars.
