An ever rising vineyard and stunning year – superb value and hence rated 97 by RP!
.......grab a bargain very rare now and getting superb to drink with much more to come!

The 2002 vintage in McLaren Vale has produced some exceptional wines despite lower than average yields in many of the vineyards with many winemakers comparing the 2002 vintage with the 1990 and 1998 vintages. The summer was South Australia's coolest on record and allowed for a cooler ripening period for all varieties meaning flavour ripeness was gained at high sugar levels, while good natural acidity was maintained. Shiraz showed intense colour, structured tannins and the flavours and ideal levels of natural acidity.

Tasting Note
Opaque black/purple. The nose shows concentrated blackberry with hints of spice and chocolate. An elegant yet robust palate, showing the Mitolo style softness and richness. Well structured with a concentration of pure plummy fruit. Will age well for at least a decade.

Maturation
Aged in fine grained oak predominantly hogshead (70% new being a blend of 80% French and 20% French coopered American oak plus 30% one and two year old French/American oak) for 16 months. A total of 16 coopers are used for the Mitolo oak regime.

As stated by Robert Parker himself
"Produced from 26-year old vines and aged in French oak (80% new), the 2002 Shiraz G. A. M. reveals tremendous fruit purity, but it does not yet reveal secondary nuances. The inky blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of ink, camphor, graphite, blackberries, and blueberries. While it possesses tremendous purity as well as an enormous full-bodied texture, it is neither heavy nor overbearing. This stunning Shiraz may be even better than the 2002 Savitar. Time will tell. Barrel samples of three 2002s revealed tremendous potential in what appears to be the finest efforts Mitolo has yet produced. There are 300-400 cases of each, and all three are scheduled to be bottled in October. Kudos to young importer (31 years old!) Ben Hammerschlag for unearthing these potential superstars."
