Description

Vintage quality: Excellent

Current condition: Ready to drink, will keep

The 2004 vintage for Tuscany was extremely good.

The growing season began with a wet spring after what had been a particularly long, frosty winter and both budburst and flowering were unsurprisingly delayed. These conditions could have been less than conducive to a successful growing season had they not picked up considerably when a warm summer eventually settled in. These balmy conditions continued into the autumn inspiring an Indian summer and the grapes slowly reached full phenolic ripeness allowing deep, complex flavors to develop. Although the harvest was delayed, it was large, and, for the most part, neither quality nor concentration was compromised.

The resulting wines were rich and gorgeous with complex layers of fruit, tannin, and aromatics with that all-important balancing acidity. Chianti and Montepulciano, in particular, excelled producing elegant, dark-fruited wines with aging potential.

Overall, the 2004 Tuscan vintage was superb and there should be a range of reds drinking exceptionally well now. The very best examples may still have some life in the cellar to go.
Montevertine is a wine producer in Tuscany. It traces its beginnings back to 1967 when Sergio Manetti bought a vacation home in Chianti and planted two hectares (five acres) of vines with the intention of making some wine for friends and family. The first vintage in 1971 was such a success that Manetti took a few bottles to the Vinitaly wine show in Venice where the wine garnered such a positive reaction that Manetti made winemaking his new career.

Montevertine is now known as a cult producer of high-quality, Sangiovese-dominant red wines from Tuscany.
