Monprivato 2001

By Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate, 10/2006
The 2001 Barolo Monprivato, a light to medium red, represents the highest level of elegance, with a captivating nose of roses, tar, orange peel, cinnamon and licorice, followed by layers of sweet dark fruit and minerals that evolve in a never-ending counterpoint of aromas and sensations, with much depth, precision and freshness on the finish. Everything is perfectly in balance here – still my guess is that this great wine is showing only a hint of its potential. It is one of the finest Monprivatos in recent memory and a wine no one who is passionate about Barolo should be without. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2026. 95 points

The 2001 Monprivato is a great, classic vintage of this wine waiting to unfold its wings with the fullness of time. The bouquet is deep and stunning, as it offers up a youthful mélange of red cherries, orange zest, roses, woodsmoke, a touch of nutskin, a great base of soil and a lovely topnote of fresh oregano. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, very transparent and soil-driven and rock solid at the core, with a firm base of ripe tannin, great grip, tangy acids and stunning harmony and balance on the very long, complex and youthful finish. A brilliant Monprivato in the making, the 2001 will need at least another seven or eight years to begin drinking well, and really should be at its apogee about age twenty-five. (Drink between 2015-2060) 94+ points

Monprivato 1999

By Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate, 10/2006
The stunning 1999 Barolo Monprivato remains one of my favorite recent vintages of this wine, and my impression is that it will one day be regarded as one of the great Monprivatos of all time. Made in a rich, almost opulent style for this wine, the 1999 displays heady aromas of roses and sweet fruit, along with a more full-bodied profile than the 2001, with generous amounts of ripe fruit, outstanding length, exquisitely well-integrated tannins and a finish that lasts forever. As it sits in the glass, notes of minerals and tobacco gradually emerge to complete this magnificent Barolo. It is not to be missed. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2024. 95 points

The 1999 vintage continues to be one of my favorite of recent memory, and the lovely and classic Monprivato should eventually be regarded as one of the finest examples of the vintage. The wine is now moving into a period of hibernation, but despite its closed state, the nose still delivers lovely scents of red and black cherries, gamebirds, fresh herbs, coffee, a classic base of soil and woodsmoke in the upper register. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and quite tight, with a rock solid core of fruit, great focus and balance, ripe, well-integrated tannins, tangy acids and great intensity of flavor on the complex and soil-driven finish. This is not quite as broad shouldered as the 2001, but it may yet give that great wine a run for its money. Clearly 1999 is the “sleeper” great vintage of the last dozen years. (Drink between 2015-2050) 93+ points

Monprivato 1998

By Antonio Galloni
Italy Report, 10/2006
In previous tastings the 1998 Barolo Monprivato has always conveyed a slightly evolved quality in its color and flavors and I feared it was on a fast aging curve. Then the unthinkable happened. Although I have learned over the years that the evolution of Monprivato is virtually impossible to predict, I was stunned to see how youthful this wine has become with a few years of bottle age, as unlikely as that may sound. It comes across as quite fresh, with a very classic expression of Monprivato in its floral nose, vibrant red fruit and medium bodied, open-knit personality. While the 1998 doesn’t possess the structure or complexity of the very finest vintages it also won’t require years of cellaring before reaching its peak and is an excellent choice for mid-term consumption and for those who want to explore Monprivato without waiting years for a bottle to reach maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020. 92 points

Brick-red. Aromas of plum, strawberry, raspberry, dried flowers and marzipan. Sweet and silky on entry, then youthfully brisk in the middle, with nicely integrated acids keeping the fruit under wraps today. Not a particularly large-scaled Barolo but perfumed, round and nicely balanced, with solid structure. Finishes long, subtle and sweet, with suaver tannins than the Santo Stefano di Perno or Bricco bottlings. This has turned out well. 91 points

Villero 2001

By Antonio Galloni
Wine Advocate, 10/2006
The 2001 Barolo Villero offers an attractive, perfumed nose of roses and spices followed by very sweet red fruit, with a soft, round personality and great length. Mascarello is among the last to harvest, and it shows in the super-ripe quality of the fruit here. Villero is also the first of these Barolos to usually reach maturity. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019. 91 points

Villero 1999

By Antonio Galloni
Italy Report, 05/2006
The Villero is usually the most accessible of the Mascarello Barolos and on this day it is just beautiful, with a captivating balsamic nose and plenty of sweet dark fruit, mineral and menthol notes. This medium-bodied wine offers great length and harmony in an understated, ethereal style and should drink well to age 25. Perhaps seduced by the Villero’s more open-knit, generous personality, on this day I preferred it to the Santo Stefano. Drink after 2009 92 points

Medium red, showing a bit less amber than the Santo Stefano. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, flowers and spices. Sweet, spicy and accessible on the front half, but kept firm by solid, nicely integrated acidity. Then juicy, tight and firmly tannic on the back end, but already showing lovely perfume. In this instance, I clearly prefer this to the 2000 bottling. 91 points
