This is rare as only 4000 bottles produced by the world famous estate in the 2nd ever vintage. Drinking beautifully now.

“Ornellaia bianco was born from the will of the Estate to translate the exceptional endowments of its terroirs not only with red wines but also with a great white wine. Coming from north-facing vineyards on sandy and clayey soils in the Bellaria area, 2014 perfectly reflects the particularly cool conditions of the year. The color is straw yellow, the nose develops complex hints of exotic fruit, with a marked minerality and light vanilla notes. In the mouth it is broad and wide, with a splendid acid and mineral vein that gives verticality and tension to the whole, ending with a sensation of great sapidity ".

A notoriously wet year, with average temperatures in July and a cool August. There was no ripening going on in August, said Axel Heinz, estate director at Ornellaia. While this affected the red wines of Tuscany, it was good news for white varieties as the grapes were able to preserve aromatic compounds. For this second vintage of Ornellaia Bianco, the Viognier was reduced to 13% and 13% Petit Manseng was also introduced to the base of Sauvignon Blanc. ‘Because it was a cooler year, it gave us a wider choice of grape variety,’ noted Axel. Smoky and floral, with scents of white peach and a touch of apple, this is an enticing Ornellaia Bianco from the outset. Intense, fleshy and saline, it balances creaminess and texture with a freshening streak of pink grapefruit and herbal complexity. A step forward from the 2013; this is more focused, structured, saline and fresh, with a delightful tightening on the mid-palate which develops into a long, fresh finish. Bring back Petit Manseng! The individual base wines were fermented in barriques (30% new) with no malolactic fermentation, then aged on the lees for up to 18 months with occasional batonnage. A final three months on steel was completed before blending and bottling.

Released in October 2016, the 2014 Bianco Ornellaia is a beautifully luminous and brilliant white wine. Last year s inaugural edition was 70/30 Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier, but this year s release sees only 15% Viognier and a small percentage (from 5-7%) of Petit Manseng. I want to point out that I m noticing a very interesting upswing of Petit Manseng in Coastal Tuscany. This new composition results in a wine with a rich and broad approach and a less pointed or floral bouquet. Instead of those more common and banal tropical fruit aromas, this wine offers a fascinating medley of stone fruit, viennoiserie pastry and crushed mineral. Only 4,000 bottles are produced.
