Description

Both bottles are in excellent condition from one of Bordeaux’s top vintages. A chance to try two excellent Clarets from two different Chateaux from a classic vintage.
Chateau Batailley 2005

Tasted single blind at Southwold. Slightly more reticent on the nose after the previous wine but there is still very good fruit concentration. Blackberry, plum with just a faint hint of orange zest. The palate is ripe and sweet, blackberry, blueberry and a touch of black olive. Feminine and well crafted, generous and giving, supple and lithe towards the finish. It caresses the palate on the way out with a kiss of dark chocolate on the finish. Beautifully crafted and sure to age gracefully. Drink 2015-2030+ Tasted January 2009.
Score: 94 Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, July 2009

Chateau Phelan Segur

Tasted at Chateau Phelan-Segur. The Phelan-Segur 2005 still has that lovely, very pure red-berried fruit on the nose with beautifully integrated creamy oak that still allows the terroir to express itself. The palate is very svelte, smooth, very harmonious with filigree tannins, leading to an almost sumptuous finish. Highly recommended and perhaps one of the more open 2005s to enjoy in its youth. Drink now-2020+.
Score: 93 Neal Martin, RobertParker.com, September 2011

Tasted single blind at Southwold. Well-well-well. This Phelan-Segur trounced all opposition from nearly every participant. I said that it might ameliorate after barrel ageing but this? It has a very expressive nose with black fruits, cooked meat, scorched earth and a slight garrigues scent coming through. Complex and engaging. A medium-bodied palate, quite grainy, nicely balanced, very clean fruit and very cohesive. Touches of game towards the finish. Great persistency. Good breeding and structure with a slightly austere finish. Vin de garde. The question mark is there because I want to reconfirm this eulogy. Tasted January 2009.
