Description

Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as "Poor Man's Grange" or "Baby Grange", in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds' solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds' skill in balancing fruit and oak. A classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity.

8/6/2012 - GRAEMEG WROTE:
NobleRottersSydney - Penfolds Bin 389 1988-97 (Alio's, Surry Hills): [13.3%, cork] {Stephen} Dark garnet still, although with some bricking around the rim. Perfect aged Penfolds nose of meat, tar and dark red fruits. Quite intense too; there’s nothing feeble about this. The palate offer dusty aging fruit, smoky flavours with a metallic touch. Oak has mellowed nicely, and the alcohol is just right for a medium-bodied wine. Which it is, and with soft powdery tannins, medium acid, and a cool, medium-length, even finish the structure has held up really well. At nearly 25 years it’s a triumph

3/3/2008 - GRAEMEG WROTE:
NobleRottersSydney - Penfolds &/or 1988 (Alio's, Surry Hills): {cork, 13.3%} Still a glowing dark garnet after all these years. There’s a lot to like here. Classic meaty Penfolds nose. Dash of tar, ripe red fruits and a distinctly sweet note at the top. Developing – not to be mistaken for a youthful wine. Attractive palate, ticking all the ‘medium’ boxes – acid, chalky tannin, weight, length. A good arc of structure from front to back palate, rich, ripe and solid, nicely knitted together. Cabernet and shiraz singing in dependable harmony. Compared to some of tonight’s other wines it may lack a little in flair, but that’s being picky. In great condition, will see another 5 years easily. A very good wine that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
