Description

Bin 389 is a very traditional Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz and today it is truly a multi regional blend drawing from as many as seven different regions depending on the vintage. Although quite different to Grange it is unmistakably Penfolds in style, with fleshy, ripe fruit flavours and chary oak. This vintage of Bin 389 is outstanding and will rival the classic vintage of 1990 in the years to come.

My last bottle from a case of 12, which has given me great pleasure over the last 10 years. I wish I had another case - this is just hitting its stride, with a great balance between full savoury tannin and red and blackcurrant fruits. Mouth filling long finish.

- Brick color with slow forming legs. It's balanced with a full body. Polished texture with a long finish - Wow - now I'm sorry for opening this as a mid week drink. Opens up rather tight but a short 10 minutes in the glass and the wine begins to open up. Aromas of a well aged cab, black currant and oak on the nose. The taste is familiar as well.

NobleRottersSydney - Penfolds Bin 389 1988-97 (Alio's, Surry Hills): [13.5%, cork] {Stephen} A vast nose that impresses with its scale, rather than overwhelming you oppressively. Sweetly developing spicy/raspberry fruits. Rich and ripe; the shiraz seems to have centre stage at the moment. There’s vanilla/coconut to add as flavours on the palate; but they’tre not overdone and remain nicely to scale. Medium-full bodied, with drying chalky tannins filling out the mouth; every part of the tongue is tantalised with the velvety rich texture, and the finish is long and even. It’s very youth perhaps kept it from favouritism tonight, with the 90/91 so complete, but have no doubt that the potential is here too; just give it another 15 years or so. Triumphant.

Bin 389 1996 (69% Cab, 31% Shiraz) – good depth of colour, still quite tight and toasty on the nose with lifted eucalyptus that follows through on the palate. Lovely depth and definition of blackcurrant and berry fruit with liquorice and a malty, savoury edge. Firm ripe tannins in support – lots to enjoy here and will keep 10+ years – will keep you posted – I still have two bottles! The Wine Detective
