Description

Created by the legendary Max Schubert - creator of Penfolds Grange - Bin 389 is often referred to as 'Poor Man's Grange' or 'Baby Grange', in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange.

First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers. Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds skill in balancing fruit and oak.

A classic Australian style with a clear Penfolds identity - the 1998 vintage of Penfolds Bin 389 has a red star rating in the Penfolds Rewards of Patience, Sixth edition. Red stars are awarded to those wines that are considered to be an exceptional vintage.

Bin 389 (Cab, Shiraz – percentages not given) – very deep, youthful appearance with a savoury, burnished oak nose with soy and liquorice. Great depth of flavour with juicy blackberry and blackcurrant, powdery fine tannins and a veneer of oak; very polished, still quite tight, showing soy as it warms up in the glass. Impressive. Opened with a 1998 Kalimna 28 - the 389 so much younger, still deep colour, all red at the rim, aged characters only just developing, opened but not decanted for 30mins before drinking, still needed another 30 mins to start releasing fruit flavours - this bottle shiraz flavours clearly dominant. Very nice drinking and absolutely no rush to open other bottles. A long life ahead for those well corked.

Dark ruby. Rich nose with dark berries, plum, violet, and vanilla oak, just starting to show some developong notes. In a good spot -still loads of sweet primary fruit, but also nicely mellowed tannins and some developed savoury elements. Great length and structure. Should continue to develop nicely, but delicious now.
