Description

Penfolds Grange, the king of Australian red wine and one of the world's finest Shiraz. From humble beginnings in the early 1950's to the icon it has become today, Penfolds Grange is engrained into the wine psyche of wine lovers across the world. The vision of Max Schubert has born an Australian legend that is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. A multi-regional masterpiece that shows power, concentration and balance to showcase the very best in Australian wine. John Duval's 1994 Grange is a beautifully balanced, powerful and expansive wine with deep-set blackberry/mocha/espresso coffee/bitter chocolate flavours. A classic vintage of Australia's magnificent wine champion.

This wine, Australia's most famous, is literally black. Aroma of sweet charred American oak dominates, with associated vanilla. Underneath is pepper, tobacco, spice and blackberry; complex and beautiful. Tremendous extract, marvelously thick like fruit purée, enormous and bone dry. The finish lasts forever. A huge, effusive wine that needs 15 years to settle down. 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon.
96/100 Wine Enthusiast

A magnificent edifice of a wine, elegant and refined in structure but dripping with flavor--a virtual cascade of plum, black cherry, blackberry, anise, pepper and exotic spices that lingers on the finish; this just doesn't quit. Best after 2002. 780 cases imported.
Score: 96/100 Wine Spectator

This is the first vintage where Grange went to a bottle with laser-etched identification numbers to preclude the possibility of fraudulent bottles. The wine, a blend of 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, shows some toasty oak mixed with notes of root vegetables, damp earth, blackberry liqueur, prune, and licorice. The wine is dense, full-bodied, not terribly complex in the mouth, but layered and rich. I would not be surprised to see the rating on this wine improve as this youthful Grange continues to evolve. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2020.
91/100 Robert Parker, February 2002.

'Hill of Grace is now released at A$600 (£413) a bottle, the same price as the iconic Penfold's Grange'.

Cork pulled the day prior, returned to bottle and served the next day, double-blind.
I had the same experience as avidwino - I loved it. And yes, I've had some Shiraz experiences that were more monumental, but that, I think, is because they were completely at peak, and this, my friends, is just beginning its plateau. 19yrs old? You're kidding, right? Still a very youthful dark garnet toward purple, with virtually no age at the rim. Confiture of blueberries, smoke, curing meat, saddle leather, lardons and sweet herbs. Layered, polished and seamless; full-bodied palate that covers all bases. Gains complexity and weight with airtime. Fantastic now, could well approach epic in a 5-8 years. 14,0% abv, highly recommended, drink thru 2026

4/7/2013 - AVID WINO WROTE:95 Points
My first Grange. Happy 40th to me! Decanted for three hours, then drank over seven. Though sampled a splash after popping the cork. First impression was the way it assaulted my entire tongue with a wall of flavour, second impression was the tremendously long finish. Dark fruits, pepper, spice, dark chocolate, a little mint, sweetly fruited. Very finely structured, exquisite balance. I have had other Aussie shiraz that wowed me more, or had more power, but don't remember one with such structure and balance. Difficult to score, as there is the wine in the glass, but with Grange there is also the story and history, and the high expectations. Tremendous wine but in the Penfolds pantheon is ever so slightly shaded by the '96 St Henri and 389 that I have enjoyed in the past. Though memory is a funny thing, and I have scored them the same.
