Description

The development of Penfolds Red Winemaking Trial (RWT) reflects extraordinary progress in viticulture and winemaking. The two disciplines are increasingly intertwined, as growers and winemakers work together in search of optimum balance, ripeness and flavour.
RWT draws fruit from 20 to 100 year-old vineyards arcing across the west and north-west of the Barossa Valley, mostly independently grown. The best vineyards produce fruit of voluptuous intensity, ripe tannins, and juicy flavours. The RWT Shiraz has a very seductive style with a plum/blueberry fruit profile and fine ripe tannins underpinned by savoury French oak.
Since its first vintage in 1997, collectors have recognised the sheer class of RWT. Already the wine has a strong secondary market following, illustrating its collectability and cellaring potential.

Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an excellent balance to the multiregional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks to Grange, expressing instead single region, Barossa Valley Shiraz matured in French barriques. The initials RWT stand for'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the wine internally when developmental work began on it in 1995. RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent and rich, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular. RWT is made from fruit selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than sheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to define Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level.

John Duval spent 29 years as a winemaker with Penfolds, one of Australia's most famous wineries, before starting his own wine label in 2003.
He was appointed Chief Winemaker at Penfolds in 1986 and oversaw one of the most dynamic periods of change in the Australian wine industry. With the support of his team in the Barossa he secured a number of awards including Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London in 1989; Red Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine Challenge in London in 1991 and again in 2000; and seeing the 1990 Penfolds Grange named the Wine of the Year by the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator in 1995

Bright hue but showing signs of age around the edges. A little residue. Interesting nose - spicy fruit and slightly gamey. Very pleasant. Great mouth feel. Balanced and a long lingering finish. Very nice wine

10/2/2012 - MYCHURCH WROTE:90 Points
Last bottle a few years ago was poor, but this has matured well. Highlight is the very complex nose with red fruit, spice and a touch of animal. Not too heavy to drink and seems fully mature to me. Way better than the 99 707 it was drunk with.

6/10/2011 - EMPIRE80 WROTE:93 Points
Beautiful Oz shiraz. Fully developed spicy flavours and integrated oak. Plenty of tannin suggests many years ahead, but without being aggressive. Superb match to a rib-eye steak.

4/8/2010 - LOUISL WROTE:94 Points
Amazing nose. Still tannic, and nice fruit to it. Quite complex with very nice long finish. Drinking well with food, but should hold up pretty nicely.
