Description

Pierro is probably best known for its Chardonnay, but they are also well known as Margaret River pioneers of white and red Bordeaux blends. However, owner and winemaker Dr Mike Peterkin also planted a small plot of Pinot Noir back in 1980.

Here are the winemaker's own notes for the 2005 vintage:
"This estate-grown pinot was produced from 25-year-old vines
which crop at low levels because they were close planted. It
was made, as it is each year at Pierro using traditional
methods: the grapes [including some whole bunches] were
placed in open fermenters and punched down every four hours
during daylight hours. After fermentation, the wine was
pressed and run straight into barrels where it spent 12 months
in oak before being bottled unfiltered and allowed to age for
an additional year before release. The work on tannin ripeness
at Pierro which was begun in 2003 continues to produce pinots
which have finer, riper tannins than in earlier years.
The 2005 Pierro Pinot Noir is fragrantly perfumed, shows
attractive varietal character of ripe strawberry and red cherry
flavours, has a lush, silky texture, and a gentle finish featuring
fine, ripe tannins and delicate acidity. For most, it will be
enjoyed young for its delicious approachability, bright sweet
fruit and generous fleshiness. There are, however hints of
gamey complexity on the mid-palate that are likely to develop
and make the wine more interesting as it ages.
Thanks to the good season and improvements in the vineyard
and winery, the 2005 appears to show greater richness and
concentration and better textural smoothness than in previous
vintages. It’ll be perfect with pasta served with meat or
tomato-based sauces or roast chicken with plenty of vegetables
or a garden fresh salad."

Having tried a bottle of this recently, I can confirm that the "hints of gamey complexity on the mid-palate" have continued to develop very nicely indeed and the wine is a pleasure to drink at 10 years of age, with an almost burgundian savoury complexity married to pure sweet red fruits.
