Description

Grenache ( cuttings from Rayas), Syrah (cuttings from Chave) and Mouvedre (cuttings from Tempier) and Cinsault makes this a firm framed giant of a wine, which needs some time to open. The property was bought by wine journalist Chantale Lecouty in May 1994, from Alan Roux, who advised them on the first vintage together with oenologist Francois Serres.

Wine Spectator
A young, powerful and concentrated wine loaded with flavors and beautiful aromas. Starts out monolithic, but unfolds to reveal smoky, meaty, tarry notes with a sweet, ripe edge. It also shows anise and chocolate flavors, along with supple tannins, on the lengthy finish.
Score: 92. —Kim Marcus, October 31, 1997.

Wine Advocate
Domaine St.-Jean de Bebian in the Coteaux du Languedoc is attempting to increase their quality level, particularly since it is now owned by the proprietor of France's top wine magazine, Revue du Vin de France. The 1995, which had just been bottled, was tight, and, sadly, had been filtered (many French sommeliers still insist on sediment-free wines). While it is still an outstanding wine, the unfiltered barrel samples scored 2-4 points higher. It offers a deep ruby color, and a tight but reticent nose of blackberries, cherries, pepper, and earth intermingled with subtle notions of toasty oak and olives. The wine is tannic and medium-bodied, with outstanding concentration, but some of the textural layers present in cask have been ripped out by the filter. Spicy, with a tendency toward austerity, this wine requires another 2-4 years of cellaring; it should keep for 15+.
Score: 90. —Robert Parker, October 1997.
