Description

1996 Ch. La Nerthe, Chateauneuf de pape :-

Spanning 225 acres, Château La Nerthe’s vineyards occupy a single block that has been certified organic since 1998. Their sandy clay soils boast a surface layer of the famous large, round stones called galets. All 14 of the appellation’s permitted varieties are planted here, though 62% of the vines which average over 40 years old are Grenache. Offering focused aromas of rhubarb, orange peel, and iron, this spiced expression has abundant personality defined by cinnamon and cranberry: It’s juicy, fresh, and vibrant, with a chewy texture and an earthy nature.

2015 Domaine de la Janasse, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin :-

Bottled end of February/early in March, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin is incredible stuff, and while I suspect it’s the best vintage to date, it’s going to be great comparing it to bottles of the 2005, 2007, 2010, and 2015 over the coming 15+ years. This beauty offers a thrilling blend of kirsch, blackberries, smoked earth, graphite, and licorice on the nose. It's full-bodied, deep, pure, ultra-fine, and powerful on the palate and flirts with perfection. It’s a tour de force in Grenache that readers need to snatch up!
Score: 99 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, August 2018

Made with close to 50% stems (the highest in a while) and brought up in foudre and demi-muids (20% new), the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin sports deep ruby/purple color as well as sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, black raspberries, crushed flowers, crushed rocks, and incense. Just a huge, rich, unctuous wine, it offers everything you could want from Grenache and is certainly going to challenge the 2007 and 2010 as the greatest expression of this terroir to date.

Score: 97/100 Jeb Dunnuck, JebDunnuck.com, October 2017
The terrific 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin has lived up to my expectations from last year's visit. It's 100% Grenache, includes some parcels planted back in 1912, and half was vinified with stems. From sandy sites, it showcases the ability of Grenache to ripen fully yet retain a sense of elegance and lightness. It's full-bodied and velvety but also vibrant, with black cherry fruit and hints of chocolate balanced by incredibly silky tannins and freshness on the finish. Really impressive stuff. Drink Date 2018 - 2035

Score: 96 Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (238), August 2018
Tasted from a single foudre representing the La Crau Est lieu-dit, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin comes across as even richer and creamier than the 2015, yet with brighter acids and similar spice. Red fruit lingers, morphing toward chocolate as the finish goes on and on.

Score: 95/97 Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (233), October 2017
