Description

These 3 bottles were part of a special mixed case bought at the cellar door in 2015; I have drunk 2 other VTs, the 1988 and 2001 - both fascinating wines, tasting just off-dry after the long ageing; my notes say lime, petrol and honey. There is also an SGN 1976, which I am keeping for the good lady's 50th in a couple of years time.

I only have an RP note for the 98; 92pt rating, with a drinking window of 2000-2016+... I wouldn't be too put off by that drink date, these were from bought from Hugel themselves and I was assured they would last decades. The 88 was fresh as a daisy when consumed a couple of years ago. Anyway, review:
The tonic and fresh lemon rind-scented 1998 Riesling "Hugel" Vendange Tardive has gorgeous depth to its personality. Layers of mineral-tinged white fruits, quinine, and dried honey can be found in this well-focused and balanced wine. It is magnificent to drink now as a sweet wine (however, this is not a massively sweet or unctuous offering). With 10 years or so of cellaring, this offering will act as an off-dry to dry wine. Projected maturity: now-2016+
