Description

Lot consists of 3 bottles of Rockford Basket Press Shiraz. 1 bottle each of the vintages 1998, 1999 & 2003.

2003:
Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #167 (Oct 2009)
Score: 94 pts
"Made from 60 to 140 year old vines by winemaker Chris Ringland and the Barossa icon wine producer Robert O’Callaghan, Rockford’s 2003 Shiraz Basket Press exhibits a beautiful minerality, a lovely floral note to its blackberry and cassis fruit, and hints of pepper, old oak, and garrigue. This complex, full-bodied effort possesses power, richness, and, much like its proprietor, considerable personality. Drink it over the next 15+ years."

1999:
Jeremy Oliver: "Marvelous ripe and luscious, but superbly measured Shiraz, steeped in heady aromas of briary small red and black berry fruit and enhanced by a measured maturation in smoky chocolate/vanilla oak. A velvet-smooth and creamy palate presents layer upon layer of ripe cassis, plum and red berry fruit, punctuated by the musky white pepper and licorice flavours of old Barossa vines. Beautifully balanced, and not a dead grape in sight." 96pts.
Robert Parker(Wine Advocate): 93pts
Campbell Mattinson: 94pts

1998:
Jeremy Oliver 96 pts
“A supremely complete, elegant and stylish Shiraz which remains totally faithful to its Barossa heritage. Opulent and exotically perfumed, its pristine aromas of spicy plum and dark berry fruit are laced with licorice and peppery undertones, while sweet chocolate oak contributes smoothness and depth. More concentrated and powerful than the 1996 vintage, its thick weight of fruit is perfectly complemented by powerful, sinewy tannins.”
Campbell Mattinson 94 pts
“Wide, fat and syrupy, but then that’s the 1998 vintage. It drinks like an airport novel, all guts and kisses, like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Syrupy blackberry. A soft mesh of oak. Length. Balance. Fruit integrity. A tarry earthiness that is pure Barossa. It is a very good wine, a mouth-romp. It is a wine to be lavished and enjoyed. But it is not the classic piece of contemplation it might have seemed on release."

Ullage: from experience I conclude 'Base of Neck' at worst, but the Rockford Basket Press Shiraz 1999 & 2003 have a distinctive sloped neck, so please see photo to clarify.

2003: It is 8mm below base of capsule.
1999: It is 10mm below base of capsule.
1998: It is 13mm below base of capsule.

We currently have 4 different lots on offer, totalling 11 bottles of Basket Press Shiraz. These are the last bottles of this private collection that we have.
