Sarget de Gruaud Larose was introduced in 1979 as the second wine of the famous St-Julien second growth Gruaud Larose. About 16,000 cases are produced every year.

The Cabernet-rich Bordeaux wines of Saint Julien are among the world's most sought after. Claret lovers should take note of Hugh Johnson's erudite assessment of Jean Merlaut's Second Growth Château Gruaud Larose: "Consistently one of the fruitiest, smoothest, easiest to enjoy of the great Bordeaux, although as long lived as most, and better value than almost any. Superlative quality since 1995" (Wine Companion). Sarget is the estate's second wine, a fine blend of the cuvées that remain after the estate's very finest barrels have been selected for the Grand Vin.Now fully mature, this claret is supple and mellow with evolved Autumn berry and spice complexity.

This wine seems to be now approaching its peak and should drink well for around another 5 years.
