Upon release, this classic, balanced ’94 Sassicaia offered a mélange of red and blue fruits, fresh-cut herbs, cigar wrapper, and warm saddle leather, all conveyed on a balanced, restrained palate replete with chewy tannins. Now with two decades of perfect maturity, this wine adds tertiary notes to the mix, deepening the brooding character of tobacco and leather, and offering a touch of dried fruits to its velvety, sinuous palate. Rainy and cool in the spring and hot and dry in the summer, 1994 didn’t offer prime winemaking conditions; fortunately, Tenuta San Guido’s microclimate aided the grapes to exceptional development and a harvest of rich, thick-skinned, nicely tannic grapes. This wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel, macerating for fifteen days; secondary fermentation also occurs in steel, and then the wine ages for two years in barrique and a few months in bottle before release
