What follows is from David Schildknecht for International Wine Cellar(Steve Tanzer) Schloss Johannisberg. Johannes and Hans-Hermann
Eser scored some dramatic successes this year, particularly in
their wines carrying significant residual sugar. The harvest in
their numerous high-elevation sites extended through November.
At the same time, some wines from low-lying sites such as the
Jesuitengarten showed inelegant acids and dilution as a result of
the September rains. The 2001s were bottled late, beginning in
May. Not only are the Johannishof rieslings among the finest
contemporary representations of Rheingau class and complexity,
they are also attractively priced vis-a-vis most of their so-called
competition.
