Description

Smith Woodhouse Port comes from the Upper Douro in the Rio Torto district. The majority of the Port is still produced using the ancient tradition of treading the grapes by foot in stone lagares. Smith Woodhouse Port is mostly sourced from the Madalena vineyard producing smooth, well balanced and delicate fruit flavours.

Through the last 200 years, this small Port Company has built a reputation for outstanding Vintage Ports. The Company’s 1977 Vintage was awarded 99 points by the Wine Spectator and judged as the finest Vintage Port of that year. (BBR website)

tasting note yearExceptionally concentrated-looking mid crimson with some blue still evident. Big and fruity and alcoholic – California style! A note that is slightly green on the nose. Big and bold and impressive but is all this swagger what vintage port is really about? Tough tannins on the finish. A brute of a wine. Score: 17/20

tasting note yearGreat dark color. Intense aromas of blackberry, stem and earth. Very powerful and youthful nose. Full-bodied and medium-sweet, with lots of milk chocolate, spice and berry character. Layered and balanced. So enjoyable. But just a baby. It is really fantastic. Underrated by many, including me. Drink now through 2020. Score: 96/100
