Description

Coudoulet de Beaucastel is regarded as a delicious bargain, especially in outstanding vintages such as 2009 (see notes below for details). It's made by the renowned Chateau de Beaucastel, but not classified as a Chateauneuf du Pape because... the vines are on the wrong side of a boundary line, the other side of a road.

This six-bottle case is stored in the Wine Society's temperature controlled members reserves, where it has been stored since en primeur purchase from the Society.

The price INCLUDES WINE SOCIETY DELIVERY in the UK or - if preferred - transfer to another Member's personal storage account. All tax and duty have been paid. So a great chance to buy this wine with excellent provenance and convenience.

The Wine Society gives a drink date of 2013 to 2018.

Hope it goes to someone who'll really enjoy it!

CRITICS' NOTES:

"The 2009 Beaucastel Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet red is just a notch behind its brilliant 2007 counterpart and could turn out to be just as good. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue in addition to abundant aromas of framboise, black cherries, truffles, herbs, grilled steak and meat blood. Spicy, peppery, rich and medium to full-bodied with silky tannins, this beautiful, reasonably priced wine should drink well for 10-12+ years." Robert Parker, November 2010, Score: 89-91

"From the Château de Beaucastel, the Côtes du Rhône Coudoulet de Beaucastel 2009 is very pure and expressive now, with supple plum and licorice notes and a hint of Turkish coffee brewing in the background. There's serious grip but it's integrated nicely and this could be one of the longer-lived vintages for this wine, which has a track record for aging well (at a modest price)." James Molesworth of Wine Spectator.

ORIGINAL WINE SOCIETY EN PRIMEUR OFFER NOTE:
"This historic vineyard falls outside the Châteauneuf boundary, but the style is Châteauneuf-like with its emphasis on grenache and mourvèdre. Sumptuous, multi-layered and spicy."

FROM BEAUCASTEL'S WEBSITE:
"The 30 hectares of Coudoulet are located just east of the vineyard of Beaucastel on the other side of the A7 motorway. For reasons that have now become obvious, Coudoulet is often considered the baby Beaucastel. The Coudoulet soil has many similarities to that of Beaucastel. It is made out of Molasse seabed covered by diluvial alpine deposits. These pebbles called “Galets Roulés” play a big role: They take in the heat during the day and let it if off slowly at night which gives a good start to the vines in the Spring."

And: "The 2009 vintage can be described as a wine with good structure and soft tannins. The wine is balanced and has a great acidity despite the high temperatures in August. This wine has characteristics of a great vintage such as 2005 and 2007 with great ageing potential."
