Description

From the Wine Advocate :-

The true glories of Marques de Murrieta are the red wines. The sensational 1968 Castillo Ygay is an extremely dense, concentrated, full-bodied wine with loads of flavor. Robert Parker 1994

From Cellar Tracker (I just love the 3rd review ! - translated crudely from the Spanish but then quite beautiful as such ; and the fifth !!)

1/28/2017 - REDDERS LIKES THIS WINE: 95 Points
from memory the second last of 6 decades of Rioja.
Colour holding well some browning. Magnificent nose , almost burgundian still with a hint of oak. Sublime powerful but balanced on palate . Quite astonishing at 51 years old.

10/13/2015 - AV2012 WROTE: 95 Points
1982 and other wines: Bold, fat, intense fruity, vanilla and menthol nose. So lively and energetic. Just a WOW wine and a WOTN for me

5/3/2014 - LOS 12 GLOTONES LIKES THIS WINE: 97 Points
Ruby granatum of medium-high layer, covered, limpid, bright. Reddish and amber reflections, luminous, effulgent. A marvel of color that makes us think of a wine with 25 years less. Of an extraction difficult to find in wines of this age. Trimming at the minimum expression, like a tongue of sand in the middle of the ocean, of coppery and orange shades, of great difference with the meniscus. The thing promises!
It appears with an excessive power, without frills, powerful, abundant in everything and very complete in any imaginable aspect. We must pay a lot of attention to not lose everything that is giving of itself. The reduced fruit stands out with a medicated point, a herbalist, which is fused with the game, faisandaje, blood, wet hair and a fine tessitura on tanned skins (Russian leather) and aromatic tobacco of the highest elegance. In the background noble woods, cedar, leaf litter, graphite, caramelised sugar, marmite are melted.
In the mouth dazzles for its initial freshness, a sharp blade of acidity, enveloping, vivid, full of energy that bursts in unexpectedly and seems to hide everything. Only for this reason it would be worth trying a wine like that but after this first pyrotechnic firecracker is a wine full of nuances, complex, of an absolute depth. Well hatched, solid, with rocky, firm tannins that dress a more nervous than elegant or classic. There is a point of spices and red fruit, reduced, very tasty, nuanced by a trace acídulo and sweetness of great quality.

It is not the best Ygay Castle tested today, neither the finest nor the most elegant, but perhaps it is the best example of that waste of vigor that the wines of the 1964 vintage show. It is sustained in time . It seems not to have aged and the bottle keeps going to weigh very little in the coming decades. He will bury us all. Piece of wine!

60% Tempranillo, 30% Garnacha, 10% Mazuelo - 13% Vol.
Grapes from Pago la Plana, in the highest area of Finca Ygay. Without vintage records. The wine fermented in American oak vats for 30 days. It remains for 6 months in large wooden tanks (6,000-7,000 liters) where the fermentation ends and stabilizes before moving to wood. Maturing over 4 years in American oak barrels of 225 liters. After this aging is trasegados to used wood tubs where it performs a new maturation for 23 years, 276 months in total. Manual bottling directly from the barrels in mid-1993. A minimum of 5 years in the bottle before being marketed in 1998. The cork is replaced every 20 years to facilitate good bottle development.

5/2/2014 - JAN ERIK WROTE: 93 Points
Intense brickred in color. Lots of fruit left and a loong lingering taste. Still many years left in this. Bought 1998 and saved it for my 50 years aniversary

3/15/2014 - KR66 WROTE: 90 Points
Vintage 1964 - 50 years after (Roberts 50th birthday tasting) (Restaurant Hotel Königshof, Munich (Bavaria)): A very interesting and controversial wine. Deep nose full of wet wood and earth. Palate at first very strange (not to say horse piss), then it opened up and showed indeed "cedar, clay, graphite, caramelized sugar, Marmite" (as mentioned in the previous TN on this wine). Was a bit lost in this flight, following the Vega Sicilia and followed by La Chapelle. Maybe better to wait some more years?
