Description

Despite what you might think Robert Parker has only ever given a 100 point rating to two Italian red wines. The first was the 1985 Sassicaia, a very well-known wine that pioneered the movement that went on to became known as 'Super Tuscan’ wines.

The second wine to be similarly distinguished is surprisingly less well-known. It isn’t by Gaja, or Giacosa, or even another Super Tuscan like Ornellaia. It is this wine, Redigaffi, made at a winery called Tua Rita, which has been described by Parker as “the Le Pin of Tuscany.” Parker awarded the 1997 vintage his highest rating. It hasn't happened again since in Italy although Redigaffi has come close with 99pts in 1999(!)as well as 97 and 96 ratings between 1998-2006.

As Steve Jobs might put it, "and one more thing..." This bottle is offered duty & VAT paid. The ex-duty/VAT price quoted for this wine by Fine & Rare (no-one else in UK has any) is £250. My reserve is way lower than that. Good luck!!

Opulent (decadent ...?) it is made from 100% merlot and oozes fruit as well as beautifully integrated oak, chocolate and spice. It’s a Parker wine alright but the Wine Spectator people rate it as well. They gave it 100 points in 2000 and you just can’t stumble into perfection twice. This vintage gets 98 from Wine Spectator (WS) and 93 from The Wine Advocate (WA):

“Very complex yet subtle aromas of liquorice, dark chocolate, violet and raspberry. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Harmonious and wonderful. Reminds me of the great 1997; even better. Merlot. Best after 2008. 650 cases made” 98pts (James Suckling, WS, 10/2006)

“The inky-colored 2004 Redigaffi, 100% Merlot aged for 16 months in new oak, offers expressive, nuanced aromatics along with sensations of richly-textured blue and black jammy fruit, minerals, mint, chocolate, spices and sweet toasted oak on big, powerful frame with notable underlying structure and a warm, resonating finish. Although it has enough structure and acidity to drink well for another decade or so, I enjoy Redigaffi most in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2009-16” 93pts (Antonio Galloni, WA, 02/2007)
