Description

This bottle of 1988 Dervieux-Thaize La Viaillere (Albert Dervieux's top cuvee) has become a great rarity in the fine wine world and as Neal Martin says below, older bottles (like this) sell for prices not far behind the huge prices achieved for bottles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.(According to Winesearcher, just the basic 1988 Dervieux-Thaize Cote Rotie is currently retailing in Amsterdam for £426.72 per bottle).

"Why? Well, they were out of vogue compared to the Côte-Rôties of Guigal, bathed in new oak for 36 months, or those meticulously and biodynamically made by Michel Chapoutier. Albert Dervieux and Marius Gentaz's wines were hearty, rustic, animally expressions of Côte-Rôtie – a complete anathema to what was touted in the 1990s and 2000s. As time has gone by, there has been a posthumous reappraisal and, like Henri Jayer, since production has ceased, demand focused on what little remained. Albert and Marius’ wines might have been a bit rustic, but they aged beautifully, and came to be known as exemplars of what Côte-Rôtie should be. In a couple of years demand intensified to the point where Gentaz-Dervieux’s bottles are at the same price level as those of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, while those of Dervieux-Thaize are not far behind".

Neal Martin. (Antonio Galloni's Vinous. 9/7/2018).

"In comparative tastings,Dervieux-Thaize's Cote Roties usually taste more tannic and brutal than those of Jasmin or Guigal. They tend to develop into rich,full-bodied,rather virile wines with earthy,saddle-leather scents, intertwined with spring flowers and ripe berry fruit. In fact, their taste confirms what Dervieux says about them "Je fais un vin solide et tannique".If Jasmin's wines are the Volnays of Cote Rotie, and Guigal's the Clos Vougeots, then Dervieux's are its Chambertins".

Robert Parker. (Wines of the Rhone Valley).

Robert Parker's last tasting note on the 1988 La Viaillere in 1996:-

"The exuberant, chewy 1988 La Viaillere is extremely intense, very muscular and tannic, with loads of concentration, powerful aromas of roasted black fruits and earthy, mineral scents that blossom from the glass. In the mouth,it is clearly superb, but a 5-6 year wait is clearly mandated.Last tasted February 1996",

Robert Parker. (Wines of the Rhone Valley).

The Dervieux Thaize Côte Rôtie La Viaillère 1988 was the penultimate vintage of Albert Dervieux before he retired and leased all his vines to Rene Rostaing. This La Viaillere, his top cuvée,comes from ancient vines on the top of the Côte Brune, and should have aged beautifully after long elevage in large old oak barrels.I cannot find any more tasting notes on this rare muscular wine, but with age it is more likely to have become softer and more Burgundian in style, with fine-grained tannins and expressive earthy, raspberry and cherry fruit,a touch of pepper and some minerality, together with wonderful elegance. An outstanding cuvee (with a price to match!) that is sadly no longer produced, but with maturity, still should have retained the qualities of an exceptional northern Rhone wine.
