Description

This single vineyard wine is from 28-year-old vines growing in terra rossa soil. The Ampelon vineyard is unirrigated and hand pruned, producing low yields of highest quality grapes. This was the first vintage of "The Ampelon" and Doug Bowen only produces this wine in Coonawarra's great vintages.
This wine is rarely seen on the retail market and I have only found one instance of it selling at auction. In June 2005,a bottle sold for A$124 at the renowned Australian auction house,Langton's.

"This is the Bowen super-flagship wine.It is a long keeper for sure.Intense blueberry and plums on the bouquet with obvious sawdust oak.On the palate there is great intensity, with some chewy viscous texture. The fruit is much more to the fore, with the oak present but in the background. The wine finishes with firm and precise tannins.Wait for a decade if you can". (Written approx.2005).

Above tasting note from "The Australian Premium Wine Collection".

There are only three tasting notes of this wine on CellarTracker:-

"A winner.Drinking beautifully.Drink it over the next year or so".
(95 Points).

Annabk. (CellarTracker.7/7/2012).

"This is simply one of the best Aussie wines I have ever had.Even at 10 years, the colour's still a deep inky/purple.But the nose and palate have really opened up.There's a bucket load of plum, mulberry, and black cherry fruit, and some textbook tar and eucalyptus;on the palate the lively acidity and the sweetness from the fruit are exceptionally well integrated. This has tremendous weight in the mouth, but everything's clean and precise, not overblown. The stunning finish, with sweet violet on top of the luscious fruit goes on and on...An absolute classic!"
(93 Points).

Wineamateur. (CellarTracker.14/7/2008).

"Exceptional Shiraz, that opens brilliantly.Wonderful bouquet and ample balanced flavours.Unlike other Australian Shiraz's which can be overtaken by their spiciness, this wine is full-bodied,but not undone by its natural spice. An amazing wine and the first "Ampelon" (Greek) produced by Doug Bowen.Again, the winemakers' unyielding standards of quality prevent him from producing annual Ampelons, although subsequent vintages (eg.2000 and 2005) have been very impressive".
(95 Points).
