Description

Yjar has a distinguished history dating back to the 1400s. The vineyards are located in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño, where some of the highest altitude vineyards are planted at an impressive altitude of 600-800 metres above sea level. The estate was originally a sanctuary run by Hieronymite monks in the 1400s. They tended the land for several years, but eventually abandoned the property. It was subsequently acquired by the Divisia de Nuestra Señora de los Angeles de Toloño, a cooperative of sorts that managed the vineyards and estate for five centuries. The property was again abandoned in the 19th century after a fire at the monastery, and remained uninhabited until the 1960s. Eventually, it was bought by a Basque family who spent 50 years rehabilitating the vineyards and the estate. The wine has been stored with Farthinghoe Fine Wine Ltd as part of my cellar with them since my original purchase five years ago and was delivered to me along with other parcels in October, stored safely since then as I was considering what wines to keep and which ones to sell.
