Description

Roman Bratasuik’s wines, highly favoured by influential critic Robert Parker, have a huge reputation. The range is enormous, broken down by vineyard and variety. These are clearly well made wines, in a ripe, concentrated style.

1. Clarendon Hills Hickinbottom Shiraz 1999

Notes of new saddle leather, earth, truffle, smoke, black cherry, and blackberry emerge from the dense purple-colored 1999 Shiraz Hickinbotham Vineyard. It also reveals new oak in the aromatics. On the palate, it is tannic, closed, and structured. There is a lot going on, but the wine needs 2-3 years of cellaring. It should keep for 12-15 years.
90 points Drink 2003-2016 (RMP)

2. Clarendon Hills Grenache Kangarilla Vineyard 1998

Despite being a big, sweet winter warmer, this boasts tremendous precison and clarity of fruit, intense crushed sloe and berry characteristics, finishing on notes of juniper, leather and spice.

3. Clarendon Hills Blewitt Springs Vineyard Old Vines Grenache 2002

The 2002 Grenache Old Vines Blewitt Springs Vineyard exhibits candied cherry, kirsch liqueur, pepper, and licorice scents along with a Chateau Rayas-like raspberry component. Full-bodied, opulent, and rich, with seamless integration of acidity, wood, and tannin, this medium to full-bodied, gorgeously elegant, intensely flavored 2002 is strikingly complex as well as showy. It will provide immense pleasure over the next decade. Roman Bratasiuk is one of Planet Earth’s greatest winemakers, and obviously a top-notch viticulturist given his obsession with sourcing extraordinary fruit from ancient McLaren Vale vineyards.
