Description

Towards the Paullic side of St Julian, the Borie family have run this noble estate pretty impeccably, staying true to the elegant style that has won them so many fans. Named after the ‘beautiful stones’ the vineyards sits on, the wine is made in a conventional style, with variation to suit the vintage. Not a big wine, it needs some time to develop the balance and complexity for which it’s famous. Key vintages here include 1961, 1982, 1985,1995,1996 and 2000.

There is pure, ripe fruit, a hint of secondary characteristics thanks to its maturity and, most importantly, a good level of acidity that carries the complexity of flavours through to a very long finish.

Not only does this wine have immaculate provenance in that it is ex-Château, but it was also re-corked by the Château themselves in 2011.

“A wine of extraordinary charm and elegance, the dark garnet-colored 1985 Ducru-Beaucaillou has a floral, cedary nose intermixed with red and black currants as well as flowers. The wine is fully mature and soft, with beautiful concentration and purity. It is not a blockbuster, and certainly not nearly as powerful and massive as the 1986, but it is certainly much more seductive. This wine should continue to drink well for at least another 10-15 years. Last tasted, 5/02” (92 points, Robert Parker-wine advocate, Bordeaux Book, 4th Edition Jan 2003)
