Until his all too early death in May 2021, Au Bon Climat was headed by the inimitable, eccentric wine maverick Jim Clendenen, whose bright, forward-thinking and larger-than-life character (along with his several Winemaker of the Year accolades from various sources over the years) has gone down in winemaking history. Jim was a pioneer of the cool climate Santa Maria Valley where the climate gives the wines an elegance to balance the beautifully ripe fruit

Au Bon Climat Los Alamos Vineyard Chardonnay 2018
The late Jim Clendenen made seriously good Californian chardonnays and this rich, ripe-fruited example is one of them. Expect rich apple and lemon curd on toast on the nose, dry and crisp with a mineral mid-palate and a touch of coconut water and peach on the finish.
Au Bon Climat Santa Barbara Chardonnay 2019
The late Jim Clendenen made some of California's best chardonnay's and this is a great way into his style. Grapes from across Santa Barbara County are barrel fermented in French wood, although only a small percentage new, which has led to an intense apple and lemon-scented chardonnay with great mouthfeel and length.
Au Bon Climat Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir 2018
There is wonderful purity and drive on this red-berry focused pinot from the ocean-fog cooled vineyards of Santa Maria Valley. These are some of the coolest vineyard sites in the whole of California giving the pinot noir grape a more restrained elegance akin to great Burgundy whose wines the Au Bon Climat owner, the late Jim Clenenden, admired so much.
These wines are slap bang in the middle of their drinking windows. Perfect!
