Description

Dows 1977 Vintage Port is from what is considered one of the very finest Vintages of the second half of the 20th Century declared by all the major Port Houses. Dow's Port can trace it beginnings back to 1798 when a Portuguese merchant names Bruno da Silva set up in London importing wine from his home country. Another famous Port name joined the business in 1862 when Frederick William Cosens became a partner creating Silva and Cosens. Eventually, in 1868, George Acheson Warre became a partner and responsible for business in Portugal. Silva and Cosens merged with Dow and Co in 1877 to become Silva, Cosens and Dow but eventually it was decided that the the name of the port brand would be just Dow's. The Symington Family became sold owners of Dows Port in 1961. As with all vintage Ports, Dows Vintage Ports are only produced or 'declared' in years of exceptional quality and represent a very small percentage (2 - 3%) of total Port production. The grapes that form the backbone of Dows vintage Port come from the company's finest vineyards at Quinta do Bomfim and Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira, each contributing different characteristics to the distinctive style. Dows has evolved, with slightly longer fermentation times than other Ports, to be drier style of Port. These wines are aged in seasoned oak casks for some 18 months and are bottled without any filtration or fining whatsoever. Dows 1977 Vintage Port is, like most of the 1977 Vintage Ports, is becoming quite approachable now (2013) but will reward anyone able to cellar it for another 15 to 20 years.
